Campaign Roundup - Day 17:
- NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh pledged to permanently ban foreign buyers from purchasing Canadian homes, closing loopholes that allow purchases through numbered companies or corporate proxies. He also proposed taxing profits from homes sold within five years - excluding primary residences - to curb house-flipping.
- During a campaign stop in Edmonton, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced plans to crack down on wealthy elites using offshore tax havens, framing it as a push for fairness for small businesses. He also drew a massive crowd of 15,000 supporters at a rally in nearby Nisku, calling it evidence of a growing movement for change.
- Liberal Leader Mark Carney drew a crowd of 1,500 at a rally in Richmond, BC, where he promoted his party’s recent policy changes and environmental initiatives, including creating new national parks. The event featured enthusiastic support, but also a few protesters.
- In the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding, longtime MP (and Green Party Co-Leader) Elizabeth May is facing a tough re-election battle as national issues like tariffs and sovereignty under a potential second Trump presidency shift voter focus away from environmental concerns. Despite her strong local reputation and personal advocacy, some polls show her trailing behind Liberal and Conservative challengers, raising fears that strategic voting could undermine her campaign.
- An analysis of Facebook and Instagram ad impressions showed that the Conservatives and Liberals are targeting sharply different voter groups in the federal election. The Conservatives are focusing on younger voters, especially in Ontario, while the Liberals are prioritizing older voters and trying to strengthen their presence in Québec.
