Welcome to Day 31 of Canada Minute’s 2025 Campaign Roundup!

With the 2025 Canadian federal election now finally underway, we'll be bringing you daily updates on all the policy proclamations, platform promises, and political point-scoring from the campaign trail.

Campaign Roundup - Day 31:

  • Advance voting for the 2025 federal election shattered records, with an estimated 7.3 million Canadians casting ballots over the four-day period - a 25% increase from 2021. Elections Canada responded to long weekend lineups by adding staff and polling places. Election Day is April 28th.

  • The Conservatives released a costed platform promising $110 billion in new measures over four years - including $75 billion in tax cuts - and projecting a $31 billion deficit this year. The plan includes major housing, defence, and crime initiatives, while aiming to reduce the federal deficit by 70% through cuts to bureaucracy and consultants.

  • Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre pledged to keep the retirement age at 65 and allow seniors to earn up to $34,000 tax-free, arguing that current tax and benefit clawbacks often penalize seniors for working. He framed the policy as a way to reward seniors for their contributions and ease financial pressures, especially for those still working.

  • NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh urged voters to “hold the line” by supporting the NDP to prevent a Liberal supermajority and maintain influence in Parliament, as concerns grow about the party losing seats and even official party status. Supporters and candidates are emphasizing the importance of strategic voting in ridings where the NDP is best positioned to beat the Conservatives.

  • PPC Leader Maxime Bernier told a Moose Jaw crowd that his party is "doing politics differently" by promoting uncompromising ideas - like halting mass immigration and exiting the Paris Accord - without relying on polling or focus groups. He criticized both Conservative and Liberal leaders for offering similar policies and promised a balanced budget through deep spending cuts. Bernier also held a press conference where he detailed his plans regarding gun rights.
